A message from our Prefects.

Dear teachers and all members of staff,

The prefects, as representatives of the entire student body, would like to express our gratitude for your tireless work over the past few weeks. These are difficult and unprecedented times for both students and teachers alike.

In recent weeks we have seen a lot of focus on the difficulties students are facing with online learning but we would like to recognise how equally challenging it must be for teachers and school staff.

The hard work, time and dedication given to online learning does not go unnoticed by students. We see how our school staff have worked so diligently to create a sense of peace and normality in our lives and it is so greatly appreciated.

Throughout our journey of learning  from home you have been a constant friendly face and reminder of what’s truly important as we work towards a better and brighter future. The impact you have on each and every student has only been further highlighted by your perseverance during this lockdown. In the words of author Michael Morpurgo, “It’s the teacher that makes the difference, not the classroom”.

We wish to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us structure, education and most importantly support.

We hope to meet again in PCS very soon.

Kind regards,

The Sixth Year Prefects.

Online Learning January 2021.

8th January 2021

Good afternoon everyone,

I would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families a safe and Happy New Year for 2021.

Certainly education has been very much dominating news coverage this past week with the ongoing challenge of Covid 19 facing our country. Indeed we are very proud that several of our students have had their voices heard during the national debate about reopening our schools.

The confirmation last night that all students will commence online learning beginning next Monday morning for the next few weeks, at least gives clarity for all, you as students, your teachers and your families.

January is a busy month for school communities for many reasons, regarding selecting subject choices, presentations on CAO and the TY programme, Mock Examinations – and be assured we will be keeping you updated on all of these matters as time goes on.

For today I would like to focus on our return to remote learning on Monday morning:

We have been here before –  last March – and we have learned a lot about what works best in terms of our engagement with online learning:

  1. You will all be expected to follow your regular timetable from Monday to Friday. Routine will be very important
  2. Make sure you check your school email and Google Classroom regularly for work set and instructions to be followed
  3. Lessons will be a combination of set tasks, live lessons, videos….
  4. Upload your work as soon as you have completed it and submit as an assignment on Google Classroom unless your teacher has specifically requested an email.
  5. Contact your teachers through Classroom asap if you don’t understand or can’t access your work
  6. Do not contact your teachers outside of school hours
  7. Observe email/online etiquette in terms of language and tone.
  8. Make good use of studyclix.ie for resources and live chat support which is an excellent support available to all of you in all subjects.

Let’s work together and make the very most of every learning opportunity we are given this Month.

Meanwhile, I hope you all have a good weekend.

Stay safe, stay well, stay connected.

E Deeney

Principal

A Christmas message of thanks from our student leaders.

We want to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I have always been proud to be a student in Portmarnock Community School, but this year, I have been especially proud.

2020 has probably been the most challenging year that many of us have ever experienced.

The work that has been done in keeping the doors of our school open since September is absolutely phenomenal.

It is wonderful to witness all of the time, effort and teamwork that has been carried out to make this happen.

The commitment of each member of our school community has really shone through.

We would like to take this opportunity to especially thank our caretakers Mick, Pat and the cleaning staff who have worked tirelessly to ensure that we can attend school everyday in a safe environment.

We also want to thank the office staff who keep our school running smoothly, although a lot of their work is behind the scenes, it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.

To everyone who has played a part in fundraising this year we would like to congratulate you. All in all the school has raised over 2 thousand euro this year, and the funds generated are greatly appreciated by many charities.

We would like to thank the PE department and Ms McDonald, the student council, prefects and those selling Christmas trees in aid of Action Ireland Trust for all of their great efforts in organising fundraising events this year.

We would also like to congratulate and thank the music department for the wonderful carol service that took place last Friday. As different as it was to previous years it will certainly be one that won’t be forgotten. We can’t thank you enough for lifting everyone’s spirit with the wonderful music that was played.

We would like to say a special thanks to the PE department for keeping spirits high by organizing fun and engaging PE classes for all of us to enjoy.

We would also like to express our appreciation for the dedication of our guidance counsellors. Their work has always been so important but now more than ever we are truly seeing the great impact of the work they do.

As I’m sure we all agree Ms Clarke’s weekly reflection brings joy to our week especially during these times, they certainly lift everyone’s spirits

SNAs and our resource team, the sheer number of students you support on a daily basis is incredible, on behalf of everyone we would like to thank you, the work you do is unparalleled.

To our teachers, tutors, year heads, snas and resource teams who have worked so hard since the 12th of March to make sure this ‘new normal’ doesn’t take a toll on our studies. You have done tremendous work in supporting students as we all navigate through this time, on behalf of all students we would like to say a heartwarming thank you.

To Ms Deeney, Mr Clarke, Ms Molamphy and Ms Dargan, we can never thank you enough for your commitment and dedication to the students and staff in PCS. The work you do is absolutely exceptional.

To the students of PCS we want to acknowledge all of YOUR hard work, it has certainly been a challenge for each of us, but a challenge that we are collectively overcoming

We would like to commend the third and sixth year students in particular, this year has not been what we expected our exam year to look like. All we can do is continue with our hard work which will no doubt pay off in June

Mar a deireann an seanfhocail ni neart go cur le cheile, tiocfaimid go leir slan as seo.

Ba mhaith linn Nollaig Shona a guí Oraibh go leir agus athbhliain faoi mhaise.

FELIZ NAVIDAD, joyeux Noël, Fröhliche Weihnachten,.

Goal Mile.

A huge thank you to all students, teachers, staff and parents of PCS for YOUR kindness and support. We raised  a whopping €1050 for GOAL.
Special thanks to Mr McNeive and Ms Malone for incorporating the GOAL MILE in their PE classes and a final thanks to Ms O’Dea, Mr Murphy, Mr McGuiness, Ms Breen, Ms O’Connor, Mr O’hAonghusa,  Mr Redmond, Ms Howell and Ms Clarke for running their mile too. Looking forward to many more miles next year.
